A few years ago, I began working on developing a series of resources to help non-percussionist band directors better understand how to teach and inspire their percussion sections. Let's keep it real - there are a LOT of instruments to have a basic knowledge of, and literally lots of moving parts. I keep this in mind as I hope to simplify some key strategies that will help refresh (or learn for the first time) how to identify great sounds in the percussion section, and diagnose some possible ways to help the 'less great' sounds on the spot from the podium.
