Three Oaks R&B Band and Popular Music Performance
Two profoundly impactful areas of my teaching are directing the dynamic 15-piece Three Oaks Senior High School R&B Band and co-writing and piloting new Popular Music Performance courses. These initiatives reach a new crowd of music-interested students and genuinely transform their lives.
My jaw is on the floor and I need tissues on a regular basis, as I repeatedly experience the power of teenagers stepping far beyond their "comfort zone" to take risks, bare their souls and truly lean into the art of performing music they love. Understandably, this word is getting out about all of the exciting things happening at Three Oaks Senior High school, including a recent story on our PMP program with CBC, which beautifully follows up a feature in 2021 during our first spring of this new curriculum.

TOSH R&B Band
Imagine the electrifying energy of Stevie Wonder's full band lighting up the stage. That's the magic I feel directing our high school music program's premier ensemble.
The Three Oaks Senior High R&B Band in Summerside, PEI, brings great music's infectious energy to life. From Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin to Amy Winehouse, Frank Sinatra, Bruno Mars, and Taylor Swift, our band lives the music. We show that high school music programs can be as diverse, dynamic, and powerful as professional acts.

Popular Music Performance
The PMP curriculum is groundbreaking, empowering students to shape their own musical goals. It goes beyond only offering traditional ensemble based classes like band (which we love!) to include musicians from a winder range of backgrounds, reaching new demographics and celebrating diverse musical interests and experiences.
As students progress, they dive deeper into the creative process, supported by mentors and peers who quickly become each other's biggest fans. The motto that we establish at the beginning of the semester is to, above all else, #protectthevibe of our space, knowing that students MUST feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and then in the wise words of Taylor Swift 'shake it off!'. There's a strong emphasis on experiencing a variety performance venues, gaining skills for a meaningful career in the music industry.
